A64 3200+ Radeon9800 Pro, 3Dmark 4750, what gives?

The subject of my post says it all. I'm not entirely sure that this is the right forum for asking this question, but it seemed as good as any. So, what's going on here? Are there some software tweaks I should try, is my hardware just not performing maximally?

So far this system works great for the games that I've tried on it, but I'm concerned that if I get some real system pushers (like Far Cry) it will not live up to its potential.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you have a different video card before? If you did, did you reinstall windows? Did you install your chipset drivers for your mobo?

No, I didn't have a different video card before, however I did have to reinstall its drivers about a week ago. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by chipset drivers for my motherboard, so maybe this means that I didn't install them...

You should of got a disc either floppy or on cd that said chipset drivers on it. It would of came with your mobo. That maybe the problem. You are probably using the windows generic drivers. Also when you reinstalled the drivers did you make sure to uninstall the old ones? Many people tend to just update them by installing the latest version instead of uninstalling the old display drivers first.

Is that for 3d mark 01 or 03?

If its for 01 then you have some problems but if its for 03 then check your driver settings and make sure AA and AF are off if you want to better your score.

It's 03... should have posted that originally. Yeah, I did turn off AA and AF in my driver settings, so I don't think that's the problem.

Also, how can I tell if I have the chipset drivers for my motherboard installed? It doesn't list 'motherboard' in my device manager, so is my motherboard under the 'computer' heading? If that's true, all it lists there is an ACPI uniprocessor PC, using default windows drivers.

Again, any help is appreciated. I didn't think I was such a n00b but I guess I am lol.

If your card is running in AGP 8x with the K8V you have them installed. You can always be on the safe side and download them and install them again, they are the VIA 4 in 1's. Did you turn down the mipmap quality and all that stuff in the custom settings? Also, do you have any memory hogging background apps? 4750 is low but not the kind of low from missing drivers (unless they are windows generic.)

If you were using the generic drivers then you wouldn't be able to play practically any games on your computer so that's definitely not the problem. You should be getting at least a 5500 in 3DMark03..

On the first page for the graphics forum, Slava has an article called "Enhancing System Performance"; overall it's a good explanation of what to do to make sure your system is ready for gaming. Check it out and scroll down to "DRIVERS, DRIVER SETTINGS AND 3D PROGRAM SETTINGS" and make sure that everything is right. Then read the "BIOS SETTINGS" section also. You'll probably find that some of your settings were incorrect. Anyway, good luck.

Ok well, I solved the problem, mostly. I went through and tweaked some stuff (as per that sticky post in this forum), installed the VIA 4 in 1 drivers and a couple of other things. I think the big thing was that I double checked that I had AA and FA off... turns out that I didn't, though I could have sworn I had turned those off earlier. In any case, after all those changes, I ended up with a score of 5750, which is still a bit lower than scores from similar equipment on 3dMark's site, but it is much more respectable.
