(i thought i already posted but can't find message so think maybe i just hit continue once to preview then canceled, excuse me if i double posted somewhere as i've been up all night)

just put together a new system with a64, abit nf8 mobo, zalman 7000 copper hsf, lian li pc-v1000 case, arctic silver 5 grease... while just sitting running, based on abit's temp monitoring program (mb5 doesn't have the nf8 listed), my cpu temp is between 60-62 degrees, which seems alarmingly high to me. taking the sides of the case off, turning the heater in my house all the way off, opening a window, and pulling the 80mm fan out of my old case and setting it up in various ways to blow towards the base of the hsf all have had very little effect to lowering the temps if any. I've got the fan controller thing turned all the way up, but the rpms will react to the things i do to cool down the case and the rpms will drop so as to keep the cpu temp at around the 60-62 mark. As well, the hsf is not only not hot to the touch it's barely warm (video card is slightly warmer on the non fan side doing nothing but sitting in windows as a comparison). With all the fek holes in the case it's pulling so much air through that I can feel a huge difference in lower air temp on the side of my room with my computer (my last system would heat up my computer corner, this one is freezing my balls off just sitting next to it).

Is it possible the temp readings are simply that far off or should i start panicing and reassembling the hs/f? is there a way to better gauge actual temps?

take ths HSF off, and reseat it. It is very possible that it is just not making good contact with the CPU.

Before you reseat the HSF, clean off the old AS5 from the CPU and HSF and apply new stuff.

My old XP system's HSF was definitely pretty warm to the touch, and that was whilst sitting at around 50-55C, so your HSF is NOT at 60C. Check the temp. in BIOS.

You might find with some trial and error tweaking, you'll be able to find the right sensors in MBM5.

If everything agrees on that temp (or at any point you get any symptoms which would suggest overheating) then re-seat the HSF with some fresh thermal goop.

Wow, that's way hot. My s939 3000+ is at around 28 celsius on boot, and then gets close to 40 when running for extended periods of time, but nowhere near 60. I would take everyone else's advice, and try reseating. If your HSF isn't very hot, but your CPU is still reporting that high of a temp, I would suspect poor contact between HSF and CPU, also for an accurate reading, check the temp in BIOS..... may also wanna check for a BIOS update, perhaps.

Thanks for the replies. I dunno what the problem is. I've reseated, reapplied grease, reapplied the grease that came with the zalman instead of the arctic silver... last night for 8 or so hours I ran prime95 stress test thing and had no problems it seemed and it never got hotter then when just sitting here online doing nothing, so something is screwy. the temps in bios seem to be saying similarly high numbers for my cpu so I'm gonna take it to a professional.

on a side note after checking stuff from prime95 I noticed that the stupid backwoods computer store in Illinois that was the only place I could find a decently priced oem clawhammer core sent me a newcastle, so I'm returning this one and then will just have a local computer shop do installation of the important stuff with a clean slate.

You are fine. Dont sweat it. A lot of the nforce boards have had the same problem reading the onboard sensor. Sooner or latter, Abit will have a bios revision to fix the problem. You might want to check now.
