I just found a very interesting and informative article about AMD 64 chipsets (thanks the <A HREF="http://www.amdzone.com" target="_new">AMDZone</A>).
In <A HREF="http://www.spodesabode.com/content/article/a64chipsets/1" target="_new">this chipset review/comparison </A>, they have run a benchmark that was needed for users who are tight on budget. They compared ipact of various DDR speed.
You can see the results here :

If you already have DDR333 ram, there is no need to change your ram to DDR400. The difference in performance between both setup (DDR333 vs DDR400) is less than 4% in UT2004 and Aquamark. And even DDR266 is not a bad choice too! It runs the same banchmarks with under 8% difference in performance.
So, if you have not much money and you want to get a fast PC, you can easily only swap your MB and CPU! With the recent AMD CPU price drop, this can surely make attract some user to do the jump. This make me think that my choice to only buy DDR333 at the time was not a bad move, it can still fit into my future Athlon 64 system.
<b>CHEAP AMD64 upgrade path (<A HREF="http://www.pricewatch.com" target="_new">www.pricewatch.com</A>):</b>
Chaintech VNF3-250 @ <A HREF="http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=241581" target="_new">81$</A>
Athlon 64 2800+ @ <A HREF="http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=120893" target="_new">140$</A> OR Athlon 64 3000+ @ <A HREF="http://www.smksuperstore.com/catalog/viewitem.asp?ID=10889" target="_new">158$</A>
<b>TOTAL : 221$ or 239$</b>
So, anyone who already have a decent PSU and GPU and a good amount of DDR ram (512Megs or more) can upgrade for nearly nothing!
