A64 X2 4200 Stock Cooler?

My new Athlon 64 X2 just arrived and, after the initial awe passed away, I started to get worried about the stock cooling solution.

I still don't have the system to test this in - I'm still waiting for the DFI Lanparty UT nForce4 Ultra-D I ordered.

But should I seriously consider getting a XP-120 right at this point? Or should I just wait and see? I really wanted this system to be very quiet, and I suspect that this stock cooler isn't going to be very forgiving... But, hey, I could be wrong.

Would anyone please help me in deciding?.... :frown:

On the other hand, I just can't wait to get this baby up and running!

Hmm. Well, you've got 2 cores which run very cool anyway, and of course they aren't going to ship a cooler that's not perfectly adequate...

just going on my own experiences, I got 2.6Ghz out of my 2Ghz Winchester 3200+ using the stock cooler, but it <i>was</i> a little too loud for me... would be perfectly acceptable in an office, but for someone like me (who sleeps in the same room as the PC, and often leaves it downloading overnight), it was just a <i>little</i> too loud.

I ended up getting an XP-120, which combined with my Antec P-160 is quiet and pretty cool. (~33C/42C - 35C/45C @ max load, depending on ambient)

You've definitely got nothing to lose by trying the stock cooler for a while. Scotty boxed coolers are noisy, but the AMD ones seem ok. Personally I'd like to see both manus start offering half-decent 80 or 92mm HSFs with their retail packs, so we can all get some peace. But that's not likely to happen I guess :frown:

Heya...My 3800+ X2 showed up yesterday...

It's running about 45-48c stock, and about 50-52c with f@h running on one of the cpus. I have it on a XP90 with a tornado (undervolted tornado...). My 3000+ was running about 42-45c with f@h running on it. Take that how you will...

What's your system temps?

That's a little higher than I would have hoped, but I guess I was being uncharacteristically optimistic there...

Were those temps on your 3000+ at stock speeds? Was that also with the XP-90, or with a stock cooler? And what core was it?

The system temp (chipset...) is running 36-38c on boot, and up to around 42c on load. I have this running in a fairly large antec server case. I've drilled three holes for three 120mm fans, in addition to the 4 80mm ones in the case and 2 80mm ones in the psu. I have a 120mm blowing in over the 2x6800's and the chipset. Two 80's blowing on the cpu (from the back), two 80's blowing in from the front (1 over my hd's one free eventually blowing in to the chipset and gpus. I have the two 80s in the enermax 535 psu blowing out, and finally 2 120's blowing out in the top of the case. The three 120's and the 92mm tornado (on the xp90) are on a fan controller, currently all at the lowest settings. (2500 rpm on the tornado and something like 1200 on the 120's).

3000+ at stock (with xp90) were in the high 30's, and when maxed out (f@h) mid 40s.

3800+ (x2) at stock (with xp90) were mid 40's, and when one core maxed out 50-52c, with both cores maxed, only a little hotter 51-54c.

It does a kind of odd thing too...It's been splitting the processing between cores with single threaded apps. If i tell it to only use one or the other it does...but otherwise it shares, which creates a problem for me since i'm running f@h on one, and doing my gaming on the other. So everytime i reboot, it resets to both cores per each program. Hopefully i'll find a more permanant work-around for that. I'll have to talk to wusy on whether that's normal with dual amd's. He's got dual Mp's i think. I'd be curious to find out if it's splitting programs like that on single threaded apps. Come to think of it though...My dual zeon w/ht here at work, does that too. I had 3 instances of f@h running on it, and all 4 processors were equal in the amount of work they were doing (when the only thing they were working on was f@h). Oh well.

As to the core...The 3000+ is a Winnie...The 3800 i thought only had one variant right now (you can buy it as oem or packaged...but they're the same...).

edit: sorry i kept saying "at stock", i usually have these guys oc'd so, at stock is stock speed; The temps for the 3000+ didn't really change from stock to oc'd, maybe a couple of degrees.

Huh. You know ... if <i>I</i> were spending the fortune to get an A64 X2 4200, I'd probably also set a <A HREF="http://www.dangerdenstore.com/product.php?productid=4&cat=13&page=1" target="_new">three-120mm fan radiator</A> on the top of the case and watercool at <i>least</i> the CPU.

But then, that's just me.

What do you use to monitor your system temps? I tried to google for an app yesterday, and came up empty handed.

I mean, I'm already low on cash. If I'm upgrading the cooling system by <i>that much</i>, then it'll just have to be later.

I also got a thermaltake armor, which means that these heavy upgrades are a possibility. But not right now, I'm afraid. :frown:

There was a monitoring program that came with my board. I'm using the Jetway/EVGA board (GT4-SLI).

The software is called uh i can't think of it...sorry. (i'm at work now...) But it actually came with the board, was on the Resource CD. The same was true for my a8n-sli deluxe board. There was a program that someone recommended to me the other day...but i can't think of what it was. If i do, i'll let you know.

Your winnie sounds like it was a bit warm. IIRC my 3200+ (winnie) never went over ~37C load at stock in my old crappy case. I was using a XP-120 though. I've not tried stock speeds since I got the Antec P-160, but I saw a good 8C fall in my overclocked temps.

In fact, at the moment it's at 2.55Ghz, 1.5V, and temps are 32C system and 37C CPU. It's been folding all day (well, for a couple of months with maybe ~24 hours total downtime). The weather's got a lot colder though (turned the car heater on for the first time earlier), and my window's open ATM. Through summer it was around 37-38C/44-46C

I've been looking at the AMD stock cooler critially, and it doesn't really look too shabby. I've taken three pictures of it; you can look at them <A HREF="http://geocities.yahoo.com.br/david_chinellato/x2_4200_stock_cooler.jpg" target="_new">here (1)</A>, <A HREF="http://geocities.yahoo.com.br/david_chinellato/x2_4200_stock_cooler_2.jpg" target="_new">here (2)</A>, and <A HREF="http://geocities.yahoo.com.br/david_chinellato/x2_4200_stock_cooler_3.jpg" target="_new">here (3)</A>. It actually has a copper base and four copper heatpipes and aluminum fins, but it has only like a 65-70mm fan! And I kind of doubt that this small fan can move a lot of air around at a low rpm, low noise setting...

So, kudos for the 4 heatpipes, bad thing about that small fan though....

I was kind of thinking, how does Cool'n'Quiet affect the rpms on this thing? Can it be tuned down? After all, this is a stock solution, and if they have tech like CnQ, they should take maximum advantage of it!

Or would I need a rheostat for that?
