Hi All, need some advice re adding a discrete GPU, I ideally want something like a GTX 760 or GTX 770 but not sure if the CPU I have will hold back the GPU, Would even like to SLI in the future but again not sure if I've got the CPU that can do the business!

Any suggestions appreciated....Thanks

Thanks, that's irritating. I've built a htpc arounf the A8 5600K..May have to go intel Ivy or Haswell route. Although I need a HTPC case than can house a SLI set up.

Thanks

Hi, i used to have a A8 5600k, and i recently got a 7950 and then fx 8350 after, so id like to say i agree entially with the other guy, yes it will hold it back but not so much, about 5-10 fps max.
so if you really want a 760 or 770 you should get it right now and think about getting a better cpu later on.

The actual performance depends on how much the game is dependent on the CPU. Below are example of 3 different games with differing CPU dependencies. I'll begin with Hitman: Absolution which is the most dependent of the three.

Hitman is pretty demanding on the CPU. Most games are not like that so this represent a worse case scenario. Simply looking at the chart, the A10-5800k performs rather poorly in the game. Based on the chart it seems that Hitman can somewhat take advantage of more than 2 cores, yet it gets beaten by the dual core i3-3220.

Next up is a more recent game, Splinter Cell Blacklist. Looking at the chart it does not seem to be very CPU dependent; at least not to the level of Hitman. Yet, the A10-5700 performs poorly. I think it is just a case where the game is not very optimized for AMD's APUs and Phenom II CPUs. I'll look for another game performance chart that is less demanding than Hitman and not skewed due to probable low optimization for AMD's APUs. However, this category of games should make up most being sold where the game is not very dependent on the CPU.

Lastly is BioShock Infinite. This games really does not stress the CPU much. As long as the CPU is not bottlenecking the GPU performance should be pretty close for whatever CPU is in your system. While the A10-5700 APU's performance ranks towards the bottom of the chart, the performance is still pretty good and not that much more different (percentage wise) to the FX series. Again, I think many games falls into this category.
