They are frequently confused, but they are different. Chromatic aberration
is caused by the lens, when different colors are focussed at different
distances. In a quality lens, the design includes features that minimize
CA. It happens in both film and digital cameras. Purple fringing occurs in
digicams, and is seen at edges with high contrast. I'm not clear whether it
arises in the sensor or in the calculations that convert the sensor output
into an image file.
