Abit IS7-E trouble upgrading to Vista

Hey guys

After 3 months of independant research :ouch: ,testing and utter stress i figured it was about time i asked from help.....and boy do i need it.

Before i riddle you guys with my problem let me give u info about my motherboard and PC.

CPU= Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40Ghz Socket 468 mPGA (Prescott)

Mainboard= IS7/IS7-E (Intel i865-ICH5)
Chipset= i865P/PE/G/i848P
Bios= Phoenix Technologies, LTD
version= 6.00 PG
Date= 11/04/2003

Memory Type= DDR
Memory size= 2048MBytes

Graphics
ATI Radeon 3650 512MB AGP Dual DVI
Bus width= 128bits

So those are my PC specs my problem how ever is to do with the windows vista installation, am installing it via a USB which i know is not faulty as i used the same USB to install vista on my laptop, in the BIOS i set the first boot to USB-HDD then restart my computer so it can be detected then i am transported to the windows is loading files...(page). When the installation begins i am instructed to choose my language which i do, i then press next and the calamity occurs "No drives were found. Click load driver to provide a mass storage". My hard drive is not even detected which is odd as it is detected in my BIOS the (MAXTOR 6Y120M0 )Interface type IDE.

Things that i have tried.
1) Before selecting language pressing repair then choosing the cmd and typing hard disk, then list disk... funnily enough when i do this it DOESN'T show my hard drive but when i do the exact same thing when am in my current operating system Windows XP professional i see my hard drive.

2) I have tried changing the USB port from which i run the installation media

Please can you guys help me am so frustrated :fou: I really want to upgrade to vista so i can make use of the Direct X 10.0 for my GPU.

Extra info the USB installation media was copied from a legit legal Windows Vista Ultimate CD/DVD-Rom.

How many hard drives do you have installed? It appears to be only one, with Win XP installed and working. Maybe in that case the message you get from the VISTA install process does not mean there is no HDD. It means, instead, that there is no EMPTY drive, or at least none with enough Unallocated Space where a new Partition could be created to install to.

If that is the case, do you intend to install VISTA as the ONLY OS and get rid of XP? Or, did you want to create a Dual-Boot system in which you can choose either OS at each boot? Post a reply here.

In either case, you really should make a complete backup of your current HDD just in case something goes wrong. (If you plan to replace XP entirely, you will HAVE to have this, because you will likely wipe your only HDD clean before proceeding.) Once you make the backup, TEST and VERIFY that it is good and you can actually get all your info back from it. THEN proceed with the new installation, of whatever type. I expect that will require either wiping the entire HDD clean (if you're replacing XP), or manipulating your existing HDD's Partitions.

The latter would require some helpful tools. If your existing HDD has all of its space in one Partition, and you plan to have a second Partition created on it to receive the new VISTA installation, you need to shrink the existing Partition (limited by the amount of data it has already) to create some Unallocated Space which can be used for this. However, Win XP will not change the size of the Partition you boot from. So if this is your plan, you may need third-party utility software to do the job.
 
Thank you for your swift reply , yes i have only one hard drive with 54.4GB of free space from a total of 120 GB, i plan to install vista as the only OS on this PC and i have already backed up my data. But i really need guidance on how to get past this " No drives were found. Click load driver to provide a mass storage."
 


the question is- why are you upgrading from XP to Vista?
 
I am upgrading to vista for 2 mains reasons

1) My graphics card is the ATI 3650 Dual DVI DDR2 AGP which supports Direct X 10 games. Windows XP does not support Direct X 10 but Windows Vista does.

2) I purchased Halo 2 PC from amazon about 3 months ago to my surprise when i tried to install it i was sadly greeted with an error after some brief research i discovered that Halo 2 was designed for Windows Vista. Hence the reason why i want to upgrade to vista i know fully well that vista and 7 require more space and ram than windows XP but for the reasons stated above and desperate to upgrade to vista. around 11 pm in less that 2 hours i will take a drastic measure which i can not fully guarantee will work. 😱

I will take instructions from this YouTube video which apparently will erase all data on my PC which i am ready for as i have backed it up but before i do this i wanted to know if their was a simpler way. :sweat:
 



if you backed your files up, why did you not wipe your hard drive in the first place?
 
I would have thought you would have been able too answer your question i didn't wipe my hard drive simply because if i did i would have no OS and with no OS i wouldn't be typing this message, and wouldn't be able to find out how to fix the problem lol..
 
PROBLEM SOLVED

What a battle, what a war but in the end i came out triumphant, yes guys i have solved the problem. Whilst the information giving to me by the video i posted early did not work for me, all it done was wipe my hard drive which was fine as the video did say this however when i restarted my PC and booted vista from the USB the same problem occurred as a last result i turned off my PC switched the SATA port from 1 to 2. Then i turned on my PC entered the bios and changed the SATA settings to enhanced mode otherwise known as legacy mode. Then restarted my PC snd booted Vista from USB and to my surprise there it was my hard drive was there.

Still not to sure how i fixed this to be hornest whether it was change of SATA port or change to enhanced mode.
