I have an Athlon 1.4 with a KG7 lite motherboard (+512MB DDR), and have been experiencing a number of problems with booting.
Firstly, adding an ethernet card/modem causes WinXP to hang whichever PCI slot i use - once or twice i have managed to get as far as getting XP to detect it... but immidiately hangs once drivers are installed.
Secondly, it appears that changing the power management features kill the BIOS - requiring a CMOS reset.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Can we get all the details of the hardware setup please?

Secondly does anyone know if XP has been released in it's final version for retail sale? If not it is still a beta or a test release version you are running. Maybe it will be fixed in the final version.

My name is Jond, Bames Jond.

My ACPI incompatible network adapter killed my SB Live!

It is the released version of XP.

What other hardware details do you require? I have an old (2 yrs or so) Fujitsu HDD, basic SoundBlaster 128, Matrox G400 AGP VGA card. I have tried a couple of ethernet cards - each does the same, so the make of ethernet card is not relevent.

The BIOS setting are the defaults, version 3Y (i have just found that there is a later version!). Also, i believe that the latest VIA 4 in 1 drivers have been installed.

THanks.

where did you get windows xp from???
cos its not released in the uk till 25th october
check abits us site they have 4 bios upgrades

Definitely get the 4J bios:

<A HREF="http://www.abit-usa.com/eng/download/bios/bios-kg7.htm" target="_new">http://www.abit-usa.com/eng/download/bios/bios-kg7.htm</A>

there were DDR compatability problems addressed (I have no clue of the details)

Afterthought: Clear the CMOS after flashing, but before starting windows and make sure SF III is set for your CPU

Thanks. I have updated the bios to the latest version and this seems to have solved the problem.
Interesting point... wrt XP. I aquired it from a friend in order to check out it's networking functionality. I was under the impression that it was a legal copy (since the chap in question does not use it!). I guess it must be a beta...
