Hi everyone. I am building a duron/KT133 setup and I have the machine completely built but lo and behold the machine locks up on bootup. It says "CMOS Checksum error--loading defaults" and then it will lock up about 15 seconds later. I can get into the cmos and look around a little until it locks up. When it locks up the screen goes black and the light on the monitor goes from green to amber. The motherboard is running the latest release of the bios and I have already tried replacing the cmos battery to no avail.I also changed from an AGP vid card to a PCI and it still did not help. i have no add in cards except the vid card and am running the duron at default cpu frequency and voltage. NEED HELP. I am thinking bad motherboard but please someone convince me that I am not this unlucky.

thank you
David

Ouch...sounds like a disaster. Also sounds like a Bad Bios. Did you try to flash update your bios? cause if you arn't careful you can mess up a lot of things. Personally i would return the motherboard and get a replacement.

I second SoulReaper on this. It does sound like a disaster.
Return the MB and get a new one cause mine works awesome!

I received a checksum error when I first started up my soyo motherboard. It has an award bios. I also cleared the cmos on the motherboard and even removed the battery to no avail. It wouldn't even go into the bios setup. It would just boot to a very basic (default) bios. I was able to insert a boot disk in floppy drive a: and get it to boot to dos. From that point I was able to flash the bios. It now works just fine. Bios had some bad information, hence the checksum error. Good luck!

well guys thanks for the advice. I HAVE however tried the bootdisk trick, but the system will not stay stable long enough for it to read the floppy. the place i bought it from states that i have 5 days to send it back but since i was waiting for parts, i could not build the system in 5 days. I am thinking about buying another one from another company and then swapping them and returning the bad one. good idea or bad? i dont want to pay a restocking fee but i suppose that it either has to be repaired or replaced for me to send it back..
any advice?

thanks

5 days? WTF my friends FIC sd-11 went bad he returned it he had like 60-days.
5 days is fine if just returning it but a defective replacement, ask for the manager or something.
normally if you waste the managers time they will make/reach an accomidation(no spelling skills) with you.

Bored, Certified Tech.

BTW i worked retail for years and years, when they wasted the GM's time he would do just about anything to make em happy.

Before you buy a new board...

I don't know for sure but I would guess that the 5 day return policy is only for cash back. The board is warranted for at least a yar by Abit and should be warranted for at least a month by the store that you purchased from. Contact the seller to see about getting a replacement Abit board.

If you want to go with another brand you can see if they will trade it in. Most companies will. I returned a board with what I thought was a bad floppy controller and asked if I could get a different version. All I had to do was pay the difference.

I would check out the seller before you buy something new.
