Abit v17 - BIOS does not detect SATA drive

I had an old hard drive that failed and needed to upgrade. Got a white label 500gb SATA 300 16 mb chache at 7200 rpm. I have no way to check online or use Windows XP Home to check anything. All I get through the BIOS is IDE CD ROM and IDE CD RW....the hard drive is not recognized.

I have seen some solutions for others, but unsure if they will work on mine.

1) Update the BIOS on ABIT v17 motherboard so that the computer sees it.

2) Place jumper on 5 and 6 to slow the SATA 300 down

3) Partition the hard drive into 125 gb sections since there is a problem with the board seeing anything bigger.

Any thoughts out there?

Sata III is backwards compatable with some sata II and sata I controllers. You may have a problem with your sata controller; on one of my boards, my sata III would only run in "native ide" mode. You can purchase a separate sata III controller card like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815318001. If your abit board doesn't have the newer pci-e 2.0 slot, then you may need an older sata card like this that works with pci slots: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124028. You may also try some software from the hardrive manufacturer to prep the drive first or clone your old drive to the new sata. I use maxblast 5.0 for maxtor and seagate drives, but other manufacturers have similar software.
