About flat monitor resolutions

Hi,
i would like to know whats the reason why you can get more than 1280x1024 in flat monitors unless you jump into 20" where you can get 1600x1200.
Whats the difference with the screens in laptops? since there easily you can get 1400x1050.. i like high resolution, but i cant understand why cant i get at least 1400x1200 in 17" or 19" lcd monitor.It feels quite a waste of screen if the only thing that you get is bigger characters,icons or menus, when you get bigger screen.

You can get 1600x1200 17" monitors. You just have to look for them.

do you know any monitors that are 1600x1200 and 17" or 19"?
At least the normal manufacturers seem to stick to 1280x1024 for 17 and 19" and they change to 1600x1024 when you buy the more expensive 20"

I have a dell 2005 fpw... 20.1" widescreen 1680x1050. I've seen 17" 1600x1200 screens on the net somewhere but I can't remember where. They must exist though because I'm typing this on a 15.4" widescreen 1920x1200 laptop screen, so 17" 1600x1200 isn't unreasonable.

Oh yes, several Dell notebooks are available with 15.4" WSXGA (1680x1050) or 15.4" WUXGA (1920x1200) TFT screens. Unfortunately, I've yet to see or find a separate LCD monitor with that kind of resolution. If you know of any, please share it, because I know many who are looking.

I haven't looked everywhere but its been close to that and it seems unlikely that you will find anything (in the USA) under 20 inches in flat panel that will do any 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The viewsonic VP201 is very nice and the price is coming down on it. If you don't care about speakers and the 2xUSB 2.0 that comes with it and you can get to a Costco the VP201 is being sold there as the VX2000 for a lower price. You won't even find a reference to the VX2000 on the Viewsonic website but sure enough my Father in law just got one and he registered it with Viewsonic and it does 1600x1200 as well as pivoting at that res. I think he paid 699.00 USD

The original question was "Why aren't different resolutions available?" Well the answer must be with the panel manufactures. Like memory chips there are really only a few companies that actually make the panels. All the brands simply buy those panels and put their bezal around it. Ok it's a little more complex but you get the picture.
Samsung is a major panel manufacturer. I took a look at their website and found this link:

There you will find all the panels 15 to 20+ inches that it makes for the LCD market. Of all listed only one 19 inch has anything but 1280x1024 (or 5:3 or 1.25:1 aspect ratio). The one that is different is 1680x1050 (even weirder at 1.6:1 talk about potential stretched images).
So why? It's probably mostly an economic decision with cost of manufacturing a higher res panel in a smaller size balanced aganst what they can expect consumers to pay. It also sets up expectations in the LCD market that if you want higher res you will have to pay more. The laptop market has proven that higher res is available in smaller format so the reason can't be technical.
