About Pricelessware List

Hi gamers :)

In alt.comp.freeware I've asked to let include also games among the freeware
eligible for the nominations we'll have in October.

Susan Buger answered to me:

<q>
ACF.games was created by ACF participants. *When* it was created there
was a consensus in ACF that games should no longer be discussed in this
group - that was some years back.

ACF.games participants have created one list of best games. They may be
interested in creating another - perhaps as a joint project with ACF.

IMO we should explore other possibilities in a joint discussion with
ACF.games participants *before* discussing the addition of games to the
Pricelessware List.
</q>

What do you think? Would you like to buid again yourself a list of the best
games? Or what about joining this job with the nominations/votes we'll have
in a.c.f?

Whichever solution is good for me, I think only that it would be fine to
have also the games in the Pricelessware List.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Adding freeware games to the Pricelessware list...

I don't feel that it is necessary primarily because it is a duplicaton
of efforts which have already been done by others. My favorite games
website which is ...
http://www.caiman.us/
which has "1279 unique" games has a link called "Top Ranking" which is
an excellent indication of how good a game is. The webmaster: Rudy has
done it for us! Since there are literally thousands of freeware games,
it is best left as a category by itself and not included in the
Pricelessware list. If someone wanted to take it upon him/herself and
create such a list for ACFGames, I would see no problems with that, but
I would still call it a duplication of efforts. Screenshots are also a
very good indication of how well somone will like a game. In a non
binaries group such as this one (ACFG) it is not likely to see screen
shots. And again, Rudy has done that for us also at...
http://www.caiman.us/
The programs on the Pricelessware list are broken down into categories.
Likewise the games would need to be broken down into categories also.
And again Rudy comes through again; with flying colors with over 40
categories of games at...
http://www.caiman.us/
There are lots of excellent freeware games available on internet but so
far there are no 'official' Pricelessware games.

Hi Mark,

IMO a "best games list" would be a useful addtion to the Pricelessware
site(s). Most often questions/discussion that is *only* in ACF is about
"classic" games - Bridge, Poker, Scrabble clones etc. (There's been a
fair amount of cross-posting lately.)

If there is any interest here in a joint "best games list" project I'd
like to see ACF.games take the lead on it.

ACF.games has done a games list in the past. URLs (google: newsgroup is
alt.comp.freeware.games, subject contains ACFGR):

http://groups.google.com/groups?safe=images&ie=UTF-8&as_ugroup=alt.comp.freeware.games&as_usubject=ACFGR&lr=&num=100&hl=en

There's a 2002 list here (I don't know if there is a more recent one.):

http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze25yrg/ACFGR/ACFGR.html

> The programs on the Pricelessware list are broken down into categories.
> Likewise the games would need to be broken down into categories also.

It seems to me that a single category list - just classic games - might
make more sense than a more ambitious project. . .

For once I disagree with you Susan. As one of the all to few regulars in
acfg I do not see the need to include games in the Pricelessware List.

Genna Reeny once said:

But is a new champion steps forward and does the job, I will sure vote! 🙂

The site mentioned above have not been updated since 2002 and is not
maintained by anyone anymore. (thanks to 'Aguydude' who made it in the
first place).

When someone ask for a spesific game or a good game in a genre, they
always get good advice from the regulars here. And as mentioned by
others, there are several good freeware games sites with the games we
normally recommend (hi, Rudy ;-) ).

On another note: I would have liked it a lot if some of the regular
"flooders" 🙂-)) in acf remembered to post in acfg in addition when they
had links to games....

kind regards from

*Maria* proposed games be included in the Pricelessware List - another
person thought that was a good idea. That would require a change in the
PL rules (it's a rule that I forgot to write down - but still a rule
until it's changed by the group).

I suggested a visit to ACF.games *before* she proposed a change in the
PL rules - to see if people here want to create a *separate* best games
list. IMO there *would* be opposition to including them in the PL - why
not look for an *alternate* solution before opening that can of worms.

I think it *would* be nice to have a "Best Games List" hosted on the
Pricelessware site(s) - as an ACFG project or joint project with ACF.
More people would see it, more people might turn up in ACFG. . .

Yah but - they do keep asking in ACF instead of coming over here. . .

Yup - better yet - remembered to post games *only* in ACFG. :)

to sum up my *personal* position:

I favor a best games list - one that is *not* part of the PL
I favor hosting it on the PL sites
I favor ACFG taking the lead in this

Does anyone point them in this direction?

There are many questions there and MANY OTHER good groups people
could be pointed to.

I agree with Mark S. and Vegard Krog Petersen.

Yes, ACFG should take the lead *if* the ACFG posters wish this.

A point that I had not thought of... more exposure to ACFG. It has been
a 'bit' dead here all summer long!

As busy as you are Susan, are you volunteering?

This discussion made me to think about 'more exposure'...
Many people have absolutely no idea what a newsgroup is. Is it likely
that on the website for whatever group (ACF or ACFG) a link to search
google groups for the most recent posting to the group speciofied
ACF/ACFG? I hope you understand my question, if not I will try to
rephrase it.

How can groups grow without more activity and others pointing
specific groups out to others?

How many people have been pointed to this group? Word of 'mouth'..
so to speak. Exposure.

ACF seems so *self* contained that they do not send others to IE, OE,
spyware, virus, mp3 groups, bogs, forums. They are a advice group
more than a freeware group, as I have seen.

Just my opinion.

I've been posting games only here, but maybe it would be better to
crosspost to a.c.f and set followup-to here.

Traffic is high enough there that I overlook game requests. I'll try
to be better about pointing them here, but I guess we should all be on
the lookout.

I agree, and I'm guilty of treating it like a general helpdesk group at
times. Unfortunately, pointing people to more appropriate groups has
gotten many people flamed in the past; I've never really understood
why, but some people find that kind of response very offensive.

Good suggestion - that would remind people that ACFG exists and is the
recommended place to discuss games.

NO!

I'd *like* someone else to volunteer. :)

I'll volunteer to create the games web page if that would help.

I do it that way.
And after the "flooding" complaints I do it this way in Subject:
Name of game (game) short description : Tetris (game) - tetris clone

I hope non-gamers in acf accepts this way (crossposting, follow-up to
acfg and subject line)

No volunteers is often the problem. 🙁

If ACFG thinks a "best games list" is a good idea maybe it could be just
a list of best "classic" games or "small" games or something along those
lines rather than a list of *all* types of games.

The ACFG games page could have links to the ACFG newgroup, recommended
Freeware sites (Hi Rudy) etc. etc.

Hi Mark,

links to all 3 ACF newsgroups are shown here:
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/Links.php

There's more info for NG newbies on the site - needs some
re-organization to make it easier for visitors to find (that's on my
todo list).

An ACFG web page on the site would be a good ad for this NG - hint,
hint. . . 😉
