In the Keymapping, "Z" is listed as the key combo for casting spells
(shift+z).
I don't know how we figured it out, but my brother and I discovered many
years ago that the Escape key works the same a Shift+z; it jumps
straight to the spellcasting screen.
Unless you're so engrained into hitting Shift+z to cast spells (which
wouldn't be that surprising, game motions become pretty automatic after
a while), I've found Esc to be a faster way of casting, since it's only
one key, and it's isolated in the upper-left of the keyboard, so it's
easy to find/hit without a chance of hitting other keys.
I use this to save time. When casting spells, I can hit Esc with my
middle finger or ring finger on my left hand, then the spell letter with
my thumb, while having my right hand on the numberpad to quickly pick a
direction.
I did a search in the Google Groups backlog, and couldn't find any
mention of anyone using "Esc" to cast spells, so I thought it would be
valuable to bring up.
I have only tested this on Windows machines, so I can't say that it
would work for other platforms. However, in Windows, it works on Win
3.1, Win 95, Win 98, and Win XP, so it's not restricted to just one
version of Windows.
Anywho, that's just a little tip that I thought I'd throw out there,
since nobody else seems to have mentioned it ever (either that, or it's
such common knowledge that it would be dumb to mention...)
