About to build new pc. please give opinions

Hi all,

My old computer of 5+ years is starting to die on me so ive been researching for a new setup.

I don't play any hardcore sys requirement games. I am mainly playing Counter Strike. WoW , WarCraft3 and surfing the net and backing up my DVD's.

This motherboard allows me to upgrade to quad core but only on ddr2 with a 8gig cap. Let me know what you think.

Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS4
intel quad core e8500
western digital corsair 640gb sata 7200
500w power supply.
sata dvdr drive
already have soundblaster live 5.1 pci
ddr2 ram probably 4 gigs > . (ill be running XP 32bit so more than likely 4 gigs to get the 3.2 recognized.

geoforce 9800 gtx ( this card is a PCI Express 2.0 x16 . I do not believe this MOBO supports pci-e 2.0 but it does support pci-e. That is where I am stuck at.


i felt like staying away from the quad cores because alot of apps/games do not support it as of yet. I do not usualy overclock my rigs.
what are your thoughts?

PCIe 2.0 is backwards compatible, both card and lanes.

lots of apps can use quad cores now, WoW is one of them.

and you could get away with the corsair 450w for a PSU if you go with a 9800GTX, although the GTS 250 or 4850 would be a better option.

if you could fill this out it would be really helpful. Basically if we know where you are getting your parts from, your monitor resolution, and your budget your system can probably be stronger for what you are planning to do with it.

but as was said PCI-E 2.0 is backwards compatible, most cards dont need much more than PCI-E 1.0 x16 speed which is equivalent to PCI-E 2.0 x8 speed. And depending on the price there might be a better ATI option as their prices have been dropping quick.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: want a stable pc without having to overclock. Mainly for gaming and surfing the net.
