Hi,

As the title says, i'm about to change motherboard and cpu. I didn't think of how windows will be exported to the new one, or if its even required. I'm running windows 8.1 64-bit from an SSD, I'm concerned because I read somewhere that if its an oem version it could be an issue and my product ID for windows ends in AAOEM.

My current mother board/cpu is Gigabyte Z77-DS3H / i5-3570k and the new one Asus Z170/i7-6700k.

Thanks for your help

Solution
Very much "maybe"

Maybe it will boot no problem, maybe it won't
Maybe it will require reactivation (or even a new license), maybe it won't.

There is no 100% either way.

Unexpected answer but i'll take it. let's see.

I think your odds are good that you will be able to boot from your current windows ssd. If so, you need only to update your motherboard drivers with the cd that comes with your mew motherboard.

A OEM licence used to be tied to the original motherboard.
This was particularly true for pre built pc's like dell and such.
Today, I am not certain. I think user built pc's may be more lenient.
With a new motherboard, you may activate with no issue.
Or, you may need to do a phone activation. The key question to answer is that this copy of windows is used nowhere else.
If all else fails, you can buy a new activation code and use it without needing a clean install.

Prepare for if it does not boot.
I've read people here reporting 90% success rate in swapping parts like this.
Others reporting 90% fail.

Thanks seems like a good route to follow. Doing the setup right now.
