So I haven't pieced together a computer in about 12 years, and with the amount of money I'm about to drop on it I'm a little nervous. Heres a list of the components I'm gonna buy, all from newegg. The last thing I want is some overlooked compatibility issue or a component not optimized with the rest of the build.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K
MOBO: MSI Z97-Gaming 7 LGA 1150 Intel Z97
GPU: 2x SLI MSI GTX 980 GAMING 4G GeForce GTX 980
SSD: Crucial BX100 CT500BX100SSD1 2.5" 500GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache
MEM: 2x CORSAIR Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 Model CMY16GX3M2A2400C11
CPU Heatsink: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 220-G2-0850-XR
CASE : Corsair Graphite Series CC-9011059-WW White ATX Full Tower 780T

total without the monitor, tax, or shipping is gonna be $2,468.88
I'm still undecided on which monitor to get so that will probably come later. Please let me know if you have any suggestions on different components, alternative ideas, or if I'm just forgetting something.

Yeah thanks for the suggestion, and yeah I definitely plan on a 4k monitor, the hyper 212 had over 3000 really good reviews thats the only reason I choose it. I'm looking at some of the phanteks right now, the cryorigs seemed a little like overkill.

My opinion...
1) Go with i5 if this is a gaming rig and i7 for video render and stuff.
2 ) if you are not gonna 4k gaming, which i personally find too expensive for the time, lose one 980
3 ) I don't like the cpu cooler.I would go with Cryorig
4) 500gb SSD for system drive is too much i would go with 250gb

Just trying to save you some money for future upgrades :)

mm that 212 will do a moderate OC if he likes. Honestly looks like he/she has the priorities right tho, hardware first oc second. cooler can always be upp'ed later 😛

Not entirely sure if its worth the 2400 RAM though, There is no guarantee the CPU will like it if you OC.

one of the gigabyte gaming gt/g1 boards might serve you well as an alternative, as it allows your two cards to run x16+x16 instead of x8+x8, not an issue but might be nice for later.

I would change MB and SSD to Z97-A (with usb3.1) and 850 evo (18 dollars discount on combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.2336172&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID= )

There is noting really wrong with the PSU you selected (http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story6&reid=419) but you can get better for the same price or lower. Those suggested by timeconsumer, or http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-power-supply-rs750amaag1s1, http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-ssr750rm , http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-power-supply-rs750amaag1

Btw, the fact that you buy all your parts from one shop will in no way reduce any risk of getting incompatible parts, if that is why you want to buy everything from newegg.

I dont think any z97 board allows x16/x16, only x99 with i7-5830k or better (not even the i5-5820k allows x16/x16

I wouldn't want that much 12v ripple when I've got $1000 in GPUs and $300 in CPU on the line. It's not dangerously high, but I'd want as little as possible for components that expensive.

And you are correct about the PCI-E lanes available for any 1150 chipset. x8/x8 is where it stops (and in practice it's no different than x16/x16 on these cards).

Yeah i've decided to switch the PSU to the EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 220-G2-0850-XR. For the MOBO and SSD combo thats not bad and I do like the USB 3.1 upgrade. But as far as ordering all my parts from newegg, it mainly comes out of convenience. If there is a defective component I have to return, i'd rather only have to deal with a single company, plus I trust them.

Those are good reasons to buy from them, go for it :)

So have you come to any conclusion about the monitor you want to buy? A good way to know what is the best monitor for you, is to go to a store where they are displayed and see for your sell the image quality of each one.

so right now it I'm looking at the Acer B6 B326HK YMJDPPHZ, but its been kind of hard to find info on the refresh rate. Amazon says its 60 Hz but that was all I could find. I heard some 4k monitors max out at 30 Hz, and the last thing I want is to invest in all this hardware just for my games to be capped out at 30fps.

I stand corrected, the Z97X G1 Gaming GT can run x16/x16, http://www.hardocp.com/article/2014/09/24/z97x_g1_gaming_gt_lga_1150_motherboard_review/

But that is not really important for gaming with GTX 980, maybe it will be with next generation GPUs

Also, on the subject of 4k monitors. If you struggle to find refresh info look at the connector style. A lot of monitors cap out unless they are dual connected. Duals can also be capped but they are more likely not to.
