Absolute failure: cannot get even +5% CPU speed! (AMD FX-8350 + Asrock 970 Pro3 R2.0)

hi, first of all, I have near zero idea of overclocking except for some youtube tutorials.
That's why I only tried super-conservative overclocking my PC, what is nothing special:

> AMD FX Series FX-8350 4.0Ghz 8X Black Edition
> Asrock 970 Pro3 R2.0
> Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO CPU Cooler
> Corsair DDR3 1600 PC-12800 8GB CL9

I'm not a gamer, but the FX-8350 is too slow for some single-threaded tasks I do often, so... I though, a 10% boost would be great!
But only enabling Asrock's X-Boost makes my system unstable. As also does overclocking just +5% (with motherboard presets). I run both windows and linux, and both hang almost immediately. I checked temperature and is not the problem... it has no time to get hot!

So I wonder why, mostly out of curiosity. Is my motherboard just in the limit for running my CPU?

That board and the 970 chipset is older and doesn't officially support FX series processors and that board is rated for a cpu with no higher than a 95W TDP

970 Chipset motherboards aren't really the issue, it's the design of said boards. That board you mentioned has a pretty "meh" powerphase, being only 4+1. If you want a cheap, really really good 970 motherboard, try a GA-970A-UD3P from Gigabyte. it has a much beefier powerphase (8+2) and can EASILY handle the 8350. You just bought a weak motherboard, not a huge deal. Don't stress that thing until you get something better, though. And in terms of overclocking, I think I saw someone get 4.8 GHz on it. With your Hyper TX3, my estimate on the UD3P is probably 4.5 Maximum, depending on how much voltage needs to be pumped by your specific chip. Hope this helps

Interesting. Thanks! Well, I followed the recommendation from a PC-builder store. I ask them to give me acceptable computing power withing a tight budget.

Use the bulldozer and piledriver over clock guide on overclockers forum.

Don't use pre set settings. They almost never are truly stable.

Everything you set has to be done manually. Even with 4 phases to the CPU you should he able to squeeze 5% out. Had you changed all the setting smanually I'm sure that wouldve worked .
