Abysmal copying speeds with my Seagate Backup Plus 4TB

I bought a PC about a year ago. These are the results of the tests.

My copying speeds on my EHD are terrible. They aren't close to 100MB/s. I plug my hard disk into the teal USB port, i.e. 3.1 port. I've enabled 'Better Performance' mode(unticked write-cache buffer flushing).

Also when exactly are my writing speeds supposed to be 500? Copying from internal/external hard disk to SDD doesn't give me 500MB/s. Same for my external hard disk.

I don't see anything wrong here.

Your copying speed will always be...

I don't see anything wrong here.

Your copying speed will always be limited by the slowest device in the chain.

That "500" could only be between 2 internally connected, good quality, SSD's.
Any performance is dictated by the slowest device in the chain.
HDD->SSD is dictated by the HDD.
Going through USB might be dictated by the USB performance.

And it makes a huge difference exactly what you're copying. Optimum speed would be seen with one large block of sequential data.
Trying to copy 5,000 tiny files between an SSD to an HDD, through USB is going to be slooooow.

As slow as 8MB/s? Really? [HDD to EHD]?

Absolutely.
This is from an SSD, to an external over the LAN.
13.8MB/s. But notice the up and down.

And this is between 2 internal SSDs, a single large file.
487MB/s

So even if I have an SSD, the promise of speed is useless unless I use another SSD?

Copying between drives, performance depends on the slowest part of the chain.

In the above, the source SSD was the same in both, Sandisk Ultra II 960GB.
Destination was different.

However...even a single SSD is a huge benefit in your system.
Whatever the OS needs to read off that will be fast.

I reached a speed of 80MB/s from my internal hard disk to Seagate 1TB backup plus [transferring 400 music files] in a different PC. How's that possible?

If you look at my above pic, that speed varied from ~13MB/s to a little over 100MB/s.

Except mine was varying in the upper regions not at terrible 10MB/s. 60-80MB/s

Transferring from Seagate Backup Plus 1TB to 4TB produces a result of speeds varying from 6.6 to 30MB/s.

Why the major gap?

Fragmentation level of either drive, what other things the PC was doing at the time...a whole host of variables.

I've NEVER reached 80MB/s in my 15 years of using computers. The PC with the slower speed was actually a much faster PC and one of the drives was the same.
