AC network with extender

Hi, if I get an AC router and an AC extender, then connect to the extender using a device on N, will the extender run my N transmission back to the router at AC speed? Or does it revert to N? My problem is that I have a 2 story house. My modem and router are on the second floor at one end of the house, roke and tv are on first floor at other end. I currently have an N router and extender, and it just doesn't work worth a darn. Any other config that folks could think of here? Can a poweline go across circuit breakers?

Extenders are usually my last choice. Powerline can be very good if you buy good units (the newest 600Mbps rated are the fastest at around 100Mpbs), but a pair of good AC routers (like an ASUS AC66 or AC68U) with the second one in media bridge mode also work well. Nothing beats an Ethernet cable.

The newer Powerline adapters work fine across different breakers but not across entirely different breaker boxes -- like from a home to a guest house. Avoid any strong motors on the powerline adapter circuit, like floor fans and the like -- also do not use them on GFI circuits or place them on surge suppressors.
