Access a mapped drive outside home/lan network

So i have a pc in my house which i use a file server to and have folder in there that i need access to.

I can map a network drive if i'm connected to my network at home, but want to map a network drive in my office which is in a different location.

Also i can RDC to my file server, that is when i open port 3389. Tried it and it works.

Can anyone help me map the network drive outside my home network, do i need to open another port?

(let say my ip is 1.2.3.4)

Do i have to open a port then enter something like \\1.2.3.4:someportnumber\thefoldername


Preferably want to do this without using a VPN.

Easily, not really. You could look at either a FTP server or going even a point to point VPN like Hamachi. Outside the network, nothing would be encrypted and too easy to access, so it's not usually done.

FTP Server, do you advise using another machinge as an FTP server, or the same one.

You could set it up on the machine that had the shared drives in the first place. I assume it's just another PC. If's a NAS box, then those things usually have tools and ways to access them remotely.

Yes it's a normal desktop pc running windows 7 pro.

How would i setup the ftp server, any particular software needed?

Filezilla is a free opensource one. There are ton of opensource ones so just google and find one, don't pay. It's a small program, almost no resources.

I've found HFS to be easiest to setup and use in these circumstances.
If you really want a FTP server - you can install Microsoft own IIS on your Windows, and enable FTP from there.
