Access linux system with name with out ipAddress

How do other machines traditionally resolve hosts by name (DNS, netBIOS, Bonjour, etc.)? This will tell how the network is configured to allow host resolution which will determine the answer

TCP/IP is probably how it will have to be done, initially, making changes later, if possible.
