How can access the hard drive from a defunct Win8 laptop? Connecting it with USB converter to another computer (Win 7 or Ubuntu) doesn't work. TIA, Tom.

Try viewing the disk in Windows 7's Disk Management. There you should be able to initialise it and assign a Drive Letter.
(Start Button, type 'Disk' then choose 'Create and format disks').
Right click the Drive to bring up Action menu.

Thanks for that, Dodger. The purpose is getting access to the drive to rescue data - won't this course of action reset (e.g. format) the disk?

Shouldn't! Hard to replicate without an 'unseen' disk. Normally any course of action that will result in loss of data is precursored with a warning. Perhaps better to d'load and run Easeus Partition Master and see what actions are offered for your disk, it's a more reliable piece of software than Disk Management and usually offers more options.

And if you think the partitions need to be recovered
