I have a Dell Inspirion 15 5100 laptop that for some unknown reason is no longer receiving power. I suspect perhaps something is wrong internally as even after replacing the power jack and the charging cord, the laptop still receives no power.

I want to salvage what is on the internal hard drive. Can anyone suggest how I might be able to access the data on the drive?

Remove the drive, plug it into an external USB powered dock.

You'll almost certainly have permissions issues for what you may bee trying to access, but it should work.

plug it into another pc directly and access whatever can be from there.

keep in mind windows encrypts a lot of data and/or locks it behind the current install. so you may not be able to get to any data even if another system will read it.

how will you know? plug it in and see what it lets you get to.

I rather wonder what might happen trying to use this as the source for a VM?

Haven't really tried that aspect.

I would be quite surprised if you can get to anything within User folders on that drive. If you have a very similar laptop you might be able to boot from it on that machine and transfer the information off. I am not even sure if you tried something like a similar gen Intel PC if it would play right.
