Account hangs on login, can't access desktop

Hey'all,

Woke up today to find my computer (which I never turn off) sitting at the login screen saying "Please Wait..." I've seen it say that before, but only when you'd type your password incorrectly and it hangs for a second before it goes back to the login screen. Anyway, when I type my password in and click login the system just hangs at the "Welcome" screen. I left it for over and hour and came back, still hanging. I've seen older threads on here suggesting to enable "boot log" after pressing f8, that did nothing. I am able to log into the computer on an old admin account that I created over a year ago, it's never been used, it works fine. Acts like a fresh install and only half my programs are there unfortunately. However, programs can be reinstalled. My biggest problem is that when I go into my files on the old account while logged into my fresh account I can access everything after gaining access, but when I try to open "Desktop" from the old account the system just Hangs, just like it does while trying to log into my normal account. When I right click to examine the properties of "desktop" on the normal account, it says 0 bytes, in fact 0 everything, like it doesn't exist. This is really bad because a lot of my work is saved in folders on my desktop and I need the data from there. When I logged into the new account and gained access to my files and saw that i could read everything fine in my documents I had a sigh of relief figuring that all I would have to do would be a re-install or continue on a new account. Doesn't it just figure that the desktop folder isn't working?

I figure that the fact my normal account hangs and I can't access Desktop from the other is no coincidence. Anyone know of a fix so I can login? or a way to try to get my files out of Desktop?

In Computer Management > Local Users & Groups > Groups > Administrators - Does your old logon appear ? If not, adding it may help.

Might also try expanding hard drive in explorer, go to old user name, desktop, and take ownership of folders.

Taking ownership doesn't seem to be the issue, I've already taken ownership of the entire account, I've taken ownership of the folder that "Desktop" resides in in windows7. I tried to take ownership of that paticular folder but the system just hangs. Like I said, I shouldnt need to take owernship since I already did. Still just 0 bytes shown in that folder. Everything else works fine inside that accounts folder, just Desktop giving me trouble. There must be bad sectors or something at that particular spot since Windows hangs at login, and hangs when I try to open Desktop from the other account.

I should have added in last post that maybe it isn't bad sectors just a bad file or something that is giving it trouble. Arghhhh, I want to get into it to remove all the files and then see if it loads!

Ok whoa. I just checked again and now I can see the Desktop folder. I changed nothing....I left it sitting there trying to open while using my laptop and just noticed when I went back to check Users as the last poster suggested and I noticed it was open. The hell?

Seem to be talking a bit to myself here, but I just finished moving all files from the desktop of the bugged account, going to log off and try to get in, wish me luck.

Sadly, I had no success. I managed to pull all the items from the desktop and most of my files have been recovered. The problem seems to be spreading as I can't even log into the other admin account anymore. I think I'm going to have to reinstall windows. Unless anyone has any better suggestions that's what I'm gunna do. I'll wait one day to see if any other suggestions pop up here.

Sound like you may have some sort of a virus/malware. If you have another system, you can remove the harddrive and connect it to scan for bugs. Malwarebytes is a great package and it has a full function free version. That would be my first thing to try.
