Accurate temp readings?

I have an ASUS CUSL2-C, using an adapter I am running a Celeron 1.4MHz Tualatin (Currently overclocked to 1581MHz). I have a nice big aluminum heatsink with a fan running around 5200RPM. I'm not trying to push it too hard yet, but I have a question about temps and monitoring software.

I was using ASUS Probe, and it was reporting the CPU at around 48C during general use, with the covers off the machine. I then downloaded Speed Fan and it is reporting the CPU temp at 35C?? Which one do I beleive?

One thing about ASUS Probe is that when I first turn on the machine it reports the CPU around 40C, which seems high. I sort of expected the CPU temp to be near room temp when the machine is first turned on. It has been warm outside lately (30C or so), and consequently warm inside, but why would the CPU be 40C at start up?

What is a reasonable/safe temp to expect this cpu to run at?

I am in the process of adding a few case fans so I can run it with the covers on...it sounds less like a hovercraft that way :)

Try motherboard monitor. also check in your bios.
The bios is the most reliable, and asusprobe happens to be the least reliable.

My CPU is so powerful its faster than Melb_Angel's Laptop! 😱 (Plus it's not pink)

Thanks, the bios and ASUS Probe are quite close, with Speed Fan being about 13C lower than both of those. I will try mobo monitor.

asus probe is complete crap unless you get the newest versions. go to their website (the most horridly designed place on the web, last time i went) and try to find the most recent version. then hope it works properly with your motherboard...
or just figure out mbm5 as mentioned earlier
