acer aspire 5732 Z (laptop)
windows 7 pro 32x
windows 7 ultimate 64x

The problem:

  • my aspire 5732z keeps completely locking up - i can leave it for 1/2hr & it's still frozen, not even the clock on the taskbar changes. I have to force it to power down by holding the power button for a few seconds............really not good to do repeatedly!

I'm pretty sure it's related to graphics hardware &/or processing i.e.

When i try to open image files e.g. jpg or png in the default program (windows photo viewer) it freezes, ditto office picture manager.

Image files do open ok in adobe (cs6) fireworks & illustrator though, but photoshop gives a warning "photoshop detected graphics hardware that is not officially supported....." & then the system freezes if i click ok

It also freezes if a webpage with a lot of images/graphics is trying to load

Also, if i try to get a system rating (ctrl panel/system) the first thing it does is run "the Direct 3D Aero Assessment" but it freezes within a couple of seconds

What I've tried:

  • I replaced W7 pro 32x with W7 ultimate 64x, formatting the HDD so there was just Drive 0 unallocated - there are now 2 partitions: 100MB system reserved & 297GB C drive (both NTFS)

I've checked in device manager - nothing's showing as being problematic & all drivers seem to be up to date

I don't know what else to try. Do I need to flash/upgrade the onboard graphics chip firmware? If so, how do I do that? Or does it sound more like a hardware issue?

Any help appreciated!
TIA
