I would like to know if I can replace the graphics gpu card in my Acer aspire 8951g laptop?

As In most cases I am finding that my graphics card is no longer up to scratch but as the other hardware in the computer is more then adequate im finding it hard to contenplate buying a whole new laptop just to upgrade a graphics card. I understand that it all depends on whether or not my gpu is soldered or screwed and many other things but not sure on the procedure of finding this out. I may be trying to achieve the impossible

Yes, pretty sure that CAN be done. This has an MXM slot, so you'll need to do some research to find a card with similar dimensions that will fit. On laptops with soldered GPU's, you are pretty much out of luck. But this one has an MXM slot...

you have to understand that if you change the GPU, it is essential that you get an appropriate heatsink to cool it as more than likely your stock heatsink will no longer work.
