I've exhausted my abilities and plead for help ... seems the people on this forum are some of the most knowledgeable around. I'll try to be clear and concise, walking through my steps.
This is a Windows 8.1 Pro, 32-bit tablet that worked fine until 5 days ago when I allowed an update. Now, it only goes as far as the log on screen, accepts my password, then the endless wait. That's it. (BTW, looking in DOS, it says it is NTFS file system.)
1. I have figured out how to get into the BIOS (which is very limited!), how to get to a DOS command prompt (but not BEFORE Windows), and sometimes can get to Advanced Settings.
2. I have tried numerous Restores, none work. (Sometimes says "could not access a file; error 0x80070005".)
3. I have tried the Automatic Repair, doesn't work, could not be repaired message.
4. I cannot get into Safe Mode. I even tried via DOS with "bcedit /set" commands. It says it completed successfully, but safe mode doesn't come up, nothing does.
5. Tried System Image Recovery (from Advanced Options); froze up on screen to select my account.
6. Tried to do a Reset; froze up on the screen to choose which method.
7. I downloaded an recovery ISO file from an Acer forum member, specifically for this model tablet; it would re-install Windows, set partitions, supposed to free up space, etc. Burned a bootable USB thumb drive. It should have booted to this drive, then given me a command prompt to install. I let it work on the boot for 1 1/2 hours and it never gave me the command prompt to install.
8. Attempt to re-format the drive to do a clean install.
Did a DOS "format c:" command. Message "cannot run because volume is in use by another process."
I chose to force a dismount. Message "cannot lock the drive. Volume still in use."
9. To get around the problem that my access to DOS is still in Windows, I created a bootable disk with GParted Live (partition editor).
It boots up in GParted, but is frozen on the logo screen!
Now, I'm at a total loss! I can't even format this drive and start over! Acer is NO HELP at all. Because this is not in warranty, they referred me to a fee-based 3rd party company, charging $79 to TRY to fix this. After all I've gone through, I don't think they could anyway, would be money wasted. I have ordered a "repair disk" from Acer for $59, is taking 1 1/2 weeks to get here. Now I'm wondering if even that will work!
Is there anyone out there in this group who can help??? Please and thank you and Happy New Year!
