Hey guys,
I have an Acer Predator G793 laptop. I7700HQ processor, GTX 1070. I have the laptop hooked up to an external 1440p monitor and run most games on high settings.

Regarding temperatures, whilst playing games I am reaching temps of 75-85 degrees. I have done a little research and tried implementing an undervolt of -0.154v and havent seen a great difference.

What could be causing these high temps or are the temps suitable for the setup/playstyle I am running.

Solution

Yeah, that's kinda normal. Some games will push CPU's a bit more resulting in higher temps, specially laptop CPU's that have a lower TDP right to their limit. Not all games do though. Of course graphically intense games will heat the GPU up too, so it has to output the heat through the limited venting on a laptop chassis. The aforementioned laptop coolers really work well. Look into them.

The i7 is a really good laptop CPU, but under the constraints of the cooling and design it, it will heat up!

What temps are you referring to? GPU or CPU? If it's the GPU hitting 75-85, then that's okay. GPU's run hot.

You can set a fan curve in MSI afterburner to kick in ealier when temps ramp up on the GPU. This will keep the GPU a little cooler hopefully.

Undervolting the card will not have much effect, and may only make unstable.

It is a laptop, so CPU will be hotter. There ain't much space inside for cooling solutions. They will be sufficient to keep it in check. Apart from cleaning out fans etc, you could try a cooling base for the laptop. They do work, but whether the expense it worth is another thing. If you are handy with PC's/Hardware you could take it apart and try re-apply thermal paste to the CPU! This might drop the temps a few degrees. Keeping in mind you would void any warranty by doing so.

Do all games have the same effect or just demanding games push the temps up?

Seems to be the more graphically demanding the higher the temp rises. The Division will sit on approx 83~, State of Decay 2 approx 78~ and Runescape NXT 75~

There isn't much you can do other than good housekeeping (making sure intakes/outlets are dust free, and keeping the laptop (at least while gaming) in a well ventilated area. Hopefully that will help avoid any thermal throttling whilst gaming.

75-85 seems about right all things considered. As I mentioned, changing the thermal paste on cpu/cooler to something decent, will help reduce temps by as much as 5-15c depending on which one you choose. If your okay with taking some screws out and taking the cooler off the CPU it's worth while. Normally for laptops it's a plate with copper pipes as opposed to a fan directly over the CPU. You can find lots of youtube vids about doing it.

Thanks heaps for the info and help! Really appreciate it :)

Hey everyone,

I experienced this exact problem and I tried everything. I undervolted my CPU and bought a cooling stand and it kind of worked but not really. Then I was playing rainbowsix seige and realized my CPU was running the game without the GPU. This was when I realised the default setup for an Acer predator is to prioritize the internal GPU. The good news is the solution is easy open up your Nvidia control panel head to manage 3d settings and change preferred graphics processor to high-performance Nvidia processor. Then head to set physx configuration and under select physx processor choose your Nvidia card.

Now you're all set I am running assassin's creed origin with everything maxed out and my temps are peaking at 72 on my CPU and 65 on the GPU hope this helps
