I've been asked to help diagnose a a friend's PC which for months now has been
locking up at random without warning. It's a hard freeze (cursor stops
responding) and the only way to recover is to hold the power switch in for 5
seconds. The lockups are totally random, it could happen anywhere between 5
minutes and 5 hours of use or longer. There's no BSOD (So no dump file) or
anything untoward in the event viewer.
I'm totally stumped on this one. Here's what I've tried so far.
Virus scan. (PC is completely clean)
Windows Update. (Applied all important Updates)
Memtest. (Passed 4 cycles)
Checked PC Temps. (Temps were around 40c and fan was idling at only 1100RPM)
Checked PSU (Everything seems fine)
Disconnected non-essential peripherals (PC still freezes)
Below are the PC Specs:
Intel Core I5 750 2.66GHz
H57 Chipset Motherboard
4GB DDR3 RAM (3.5GB Usable)
1TB Western Digital Caviar Blue
Windows 7 Pro (32-Bit)
Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be? Is there anything else I could try? I'm thinking motherboard fault, but I'm hoping it's something simpler than that.
Thanks.
