I've been unsuccessful in wiping my EXTERNAL HD's free space with Acronis. I've tried an old version as well as the newest one. I have no problem with internal drives.

It says completed but considering it takes about 1 minute for the 35 pass wipe, I know it isn't wiping the external correctly. The internals sometimes take 10-12 hours for the same free GB space..

Is there some setting that I am missing to allow external wiping? I am the only user on the PC's and never have admin security issues with anything. I have the same problem on two separate Win 7 notebooks.

Solution
Try CCleaner instead: http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Open CCleaner.
Click "Tools" in the far left pane.
Click "Drive Wiper" in the adjacent pane.
In main pane, choose whether to wipe just free space or the entire drive.
Tick the check-box for the drive you want to wipe.
Click "Wipe" button.
