Alright. My buddy got a new pc as a hand-me-down. He was under the impression that he could just pop his old hdd in on the new rig and it would work fine. This is not the case. His old hdd is running vista and the hdd with the new rig is running xp. Did quite an amount of google last night with him and learned a bunch of stuff but I've turned to forums because search engines can never pinpoint what I'm looking for.

I have an old laptop with a product key for windows 7 home premium on the bottom of it. I would like to give him the key so he can have windows 7 instead of vista on his old hdd. My old hdd that the windows was active on is broken, (nerd rage), and has long since been replaced and I no longer have access to it.

Question is - Is this possible with my laptop key so long as I can get my hands on the proper install disc?

Any help will be greatly appreciated and if this is possible to do that would be a great answer. XD Thank you in advance for help or trying to help.

Solution
you cant share keys. a windows key must be used only on 1 computer other than that it will be declared used. just buy a new copy of windows which comes with a key.
That process does not comply with the license terms. The product key for Windows 7 is tied to the machine that it came with and cannot be transferred. You will need a retail or OEM copy of Windows 7 to get a valid instance running on the old machine - if drivers exist for it. Sorry.,
