Active or Passive Displayport Adapter?

I recently upgraded my Radeon HD 7870 Ghz Edition to a GTX980 and I use to have a dual monitor setup. I had my main monitor connected through DVI on my GPU and the secondary I had it connected through DVI on my motherboard since my 7870 could not handle both monitors at 1920x1080p. I know that the GTX980 is able to handle both monitors at 1920x1080p and I want to have both of them connected to it but my Monitors don't have DP inputs. They only have HDMI and DVI inputs and my GTX980 only has one DVI output also I can't use the HDMI inputs on the monitors since they are being used by other devices. So I want to know which kind of adapter do I need for my secondary monitor an Active or Passive DP Adapter? Also I've been wondering all this time is it ok to connect one monitor through my GPU and the other through my MB? Like is there any reason why not to do that?

^ thats not true.any gpu can easily run dual monitors, thats why the multiple inputs !

with your gtx 980 for just 1080p/60hz you dont need an active adapter.this will do for your second monitor DisplayPort to DVI Video , else use this DVI-D to 2x DVI-D Digital Video Splitter Cable

Thanks for the help as for the 7870 it would not allow me to set the 2nd monitor to 1920x1080p it was at a lower res.
