Hey all,

I'm just trying to get started in ACW miniature wargaming and am looking for
a simple, yet accurate, set of ACW rules. I've seen Fire and Fury and Jonny
Reb and some others, but I don't know the differences or which is better.
I'm looking to get into 15mm figures as well. Any help on this would be
appreciated.

The answer is yes.

It depends on what you want to be, a 2/3 Star General or a 1/2 Star General.
If you want to do Devils Den or Pickets Charge - then Johnny Reb III is the
best. If you want to do Gettysburg, or Sharpsburg then Fire and Fury. JR is
a Regiment based game and the players command Brigades and Divisions. It's
NOT designed to do entire major battles, but to give an excellent feel for
ACW combat.

Fire and Fury is a Brigade based game and players will push Divisions/Corps/
Armies. It loses alot of the detail of JR but abstracts at one or 2 levels
higher than JRIII. It also has a huge following.

I prefer JRIII, but will cheerfully play FnF. Neither one will disappoint
you.

Can I put in a good word for JReb II ? Other than that all that the
other poster said is true. It depends on what you want to fight. The
only advantage I think JRIII has is that using four stands per
regiment means you can cut down on the number of castings you need,
but that's also true for F&F.

If you are just getting started. Fire and Fury is probably your best bet.

My only strong comment is that you should mount your 15mm troops on 1" x
1" stands instead of what is recommended in the book. Doesn't detract
from the game a bit and provides a much better base for those painted figs.

I will respectfully disagree that JRIII is a good set of rules for
beginers. While an elegant system, it is not all that well written and
/or indexed. This doesn't mean you can't figure it out, just takes a
lot longer to learn on your own than F&F.

I must admit, I do have a bias. I like to play JR III better than F&F.

IMO, F&F shoulda been a Napoleonic rules set -- and if you look on the
F&F Yahoo group, you will see Bill Gray has converted them for just that
purpose.

Now that's interesting, can you direct me more specifically> Is it F&F

I have heard that JR-II is preferred over JR-III. I have not played JR-III
so do not know what was changed or modified. Anyone able to add more to
this???

I've played them all (I'm old), and it's a matter of preference. JR3 went
from 5 stands to 4 stands, simplified the charts, added in John Hills 20+
years of reenactor experience and made guns represent batteries rather than
sections. It also corrected the effect of cavalry in the game, which I
thought was a real problem with JRII. It's moved up a level in command
from JRII.

Some folks like the larger 5 stand regiments, artillery becomes deadlier,
and there are more charts.

Yes, it is more intensive than F&F. It has alot of flavor. If you are an
experienced wargamer, JRII/III will not be a problem. Just do it the way it
says to and don't reinvent the wheel. I think that it is a really easy
ruleset to play.

acw isn't really a genre greatly interests me.
However.
Our club is an eclectic mix and I have played ACW.
I liked F&F

Some people don't like the big range of results you can get out the d10 dice
throws.
I reckon they're missing the point.
That variation is in there to allow for the odd things that happened,
friction etc.

So you need a plan and a back up plan.
You always need reserves and you better expect things to go wrong.
By accuracy I assume you mean realism.

Neither is better -- they're different scale games. F&F is better at
medium sized battles (200 men/stand, 66 yards/in), while Johnny Reb
(~100 men/stand, ~30 yds/in?) is for smaller scale games. For big
games, where you want to run an entire battle like Shiloh, etc., use
something like Volley and Bayonet (1 stand=1 brigade, 100 yds/in.)
unless you can get a whole group of people together to paint lots of
brigades. Even at 200 men per stand, you may still need 200+ stands per
side to game and entire battle with F&F.

I played JR II a couple of times and found that it was played very
slowly for my taste. Fire and Fury played much faster. By the way,
