Hey Tom's Hardware community,
Long time, no post. Got a new quandary for you all, and it's an issue that has befuddled some tech people already.
I received a portable monitor as a gift, an AOC I1601FWUX (link is to Newegg) powered monitor that has just one port and it's a USB-C Displayport Alt-Mode. Problem is, I don't have any devices with any USB-C DP Alt-Mode compatible ports -- the only device that even has a USB-C is my MSI GL73-9RCX-029 laptop (link is to Amazon), which has a single USB-C Gen 2 3.2 port in it. The goal was obviously to connect that monitor to that laptop, per the purchaser, and they were unaware that there was a difference between USB-C and USB-C DP Alt-Mode. To be honest, I didn't know that either when I told them I had a USB-C port on my laptop.
My question to you is this: is there a reasonable (under $100) adapter or hub that exists that can connect my laptop to the monitor? I'd prefer it to be small, but beggars might not be choosers in this situation. My laptop has a Mini Displayport port as well as one for HDMI, and I'd be fine hooking up an HDMI cable to the adapter if that was what's needed. Targus has a few options like this dock (link is to Targus) out there, but I don't want to go buying a hub/adapter only to find out that it needs to be plugged into a DP Alt Mode-capable port on my machine, and not the monitor itself.
Thanks for any assistance on this, I'd really prefer to be able to use this thing when I travel to have a secondary monitor. Otherwise, it's just a shiny paperweight, and the very short return period has already passed.
