Hey Tom's Hardware community,

Long time, no post. Got a new quandary for you all, and it's an issue that has befuddled some tech people already.

I received a portable monitor as a gift, an AOC I1601FWUX (link is to Newegg) powered monitor that has just one port and it's a USB-C Displayport Alt-Mode. Problem is, I don't have any devices with any USB-C DP Alt-Mode compatible ports -- the only device that even has a USB-C is my MSI GL73-9RCX-029 laptop (link is to Amazon), which has a single USB-C Gen 2 3.2 port in it. The goal was obviously to connect that monitor to that laptop, per the purchaser, and they were unaware that there was a difference between USB-C and USB-C DP Alt-Mode. To be honest, I didn't know that either when I told them I had a USB-C port on my laptop.

My question to you is this: is there a reasonable (under $100) adapter or hub that exists that can connect my laptop to the monitor? I'd prefer it to be small, but beggars might not be choosers in this situation. My laptop has a Mini Displayport port as well as one for HDMI, and I'd be fine hooking up an HDMI cable to the adapter if that was what's needed. Targus has a few options like this dock (link is to Targus) out there, but I don't want to go buying a hub/adapter only to find out that it needs to be plugged into a DP Alt Mode-capable port on my machine, and not the monitor itself.

Thanks for any assistance on this, I'd really prefer to be able to use this thing when I travel to have a secondary monitor. Otherwise, it's just a shiny paperweight, and the very short return period has already passed.

usb c have alt mode for display. regular is just data
dp is display.
I don't mean to sound rude, but how does that help answer my question about an adapter? I tried hooking the monitor up to the only USB-C port I have, and there was no video because the port isn't alt-mode capable.

get a dp to usb c able.
dp to the laptop. usbc to the monitor
Bought a DP to USB C cable, plugged it in to the monitor and laptop, nothing. There's nothing to power the screen. There's only one port on the monitor, and not a separate one for power. I should be able to return the cable, at least.

Well, thanks for the responses, I guess. I saw an adapter/hub from Targus that was > $200, and that's ridiculous because a new compatible monitor screen is less than that. At least it was just a gift, so I'll regift it to someone that has a machine that can use it.
