Adaptive sync vs vsync

Ok so I am looking into purchasing a new 4k monitor. Now I have a nvidia 1080, and the g-sync monitors are twice the price as the free sync monitors. I was wondering if I was to buy a free sync monitor and just enable v-sync would it be the same or atleast close to the performance as the adaptive g-sync monitor. The free sync ones are way cheaper and the screens are bigger and I would hate to buy the g-sync if it really wouldn't be that much better performance. Thanks in advance.

GSync is only for nVidia cards, FreeSync is only with AMD cards. You have GTX1080, there is no way you can use FreeSync.

GSync is mainly to eliminate screen tearing but since most GSync monitors are running on 144Hz, this main purpose of GSync is not noticeable on such monitors. Screen tearing is practically not visible or none existing on 144hz monitors.
Screen tearing happens if your GPU can produce more fps than the monitor can display (higher than the refresh rate). You can eliminate screen tearing by VSync but VSync causes stutters, if the fps fall below the refresh rate.
GSync (added value) shines when the fps is low, since it makes the game feels smoother, just do not expect the smoothness of higher fps.
In my eyes after using GSync for quite some times, for almost 2 years, it does not really worth the extra price if your PC can push high fps e.g. 90 fps and if your monitor can already run 144/165hz.
However, if you wanna get the full out of your GTX1080, it is best to buy a monitor with GSync.
There are other disadvantages of VSync, with GSync those disadvantages are gone forever.
