I had the same problem with the Adata HD650. It wasn't being recognized by my desktop but it was being recognized by my laptops. Turned out that the USB extension I was using was only USB 2.0. I thought that the USB 2.0 extension cable would make the 3.0 port and the drive default to USB 2.0 and it didn't. Being USB 2.0 backward compatible, I thought the drive would be recognized in any port with any cable. Not so. As soon as I plugged the drive directly into the USB 3.0 port it was recognized by my desktop system. For some reason the drive is undiscovered in any USB 2.0 port on the desktop but on the laptops its works fine in USB 2.0 ports. The drivers on the desktop system are up to date, so I am not sure why its not being seen on the 2.0 ports?

Bottom line, plugging the drive into a USB 3.0 port solves the problem.

Hey there, kmilburn.

This is a weird issue. As you've mentioned USB 3.0 is backwards compatible (as well as the older versions), so you should have no problems with it being connected to a USB 2.0 port, just as it is with your laptops. So even if the drivers are up to data, you might want to try a different (maybe older) version for your USB controller. You could also try updating your OS if there are available updates, to see if this changes anything.
Have you tried all the USB 2.0 ports of your PC case. I've heard of some cases where a drive won't be recognized if connected to a USB port on the front panel, but it is recognized when connected to one of the USB ports on the back of the case. Check if there's an available driver for that HDD on the manufacturer's website, which could fix this problem.

Please let me know how it goes.

Boogieman_WD, thanks for the reply.

Connecting a USB 3.0 cable to the back of my desktop tower has solved the issue of the HDD not being seen by the O/S. When I plug the drive directly into the back USB 2.0 ports its still not discoverable. However I am pretty sure that the USB ports on the laptops are USB 2.0 since they are not blue. Through all this I have discovered that my USB 3.0 port on the front of my tower is not connected but the USB 2.0 port is and the drive can't be seen on that port either. So any USB 2.0 port on this tower can't see the drive but the USB 3.0 ports all see the drive (except for the front port that isn't connected!). And yet the USB 2.0 ports on the two laptops do see the drive with no problems.

The desktop is running Windows 7 (fully updated), one laptop is running Windows 7 (not updated) and the other Windows 10 (fully updated). Both laptops have no problem with seeing and accessing the drive.

No drivers for the Adata HD 650 on the manufacturers web site.

The whole thing has been a strange experience. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why initially the drive was discoverable on the desktop then it wan't. I also tried a friends Adata HD 650 and got the same results on the various ports. So its not the drive. The issue seems to be with the desktop machines USB 2.0 ports (USB controller).

All the ports (USN 2.0 and USB 3.0) on the desktop recognize USB sticks without any problems. So I am at a loss as to why the desktop isn't seeing the Adata drive on the USB 2.0 ports, when it works on the laptop USB 2.0 ports (unless they aren't USB 2.0 ports and are really USB 3.0 ports)?... Laptop #1 has 2 USB 2.0 ports and the drive is accessable on both ports. Laptop #2 has 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 USB 3.0 and you can access the drive on all the ports. The desktop has 8 USB 2.0 ports and 2 USB 3.0 ports on the back and 1 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0 port on the front - the USB 3.0 port is not connected, something I will have to fix.

I have read numerous other people having the same problem getting their systems to recognize the Adata HD 650 and thought that my situation, although unique might be of some use to others so they could at least get their systems to see and access this drive.
