Hi All,

So the HD stopped being able to boot. There are bad sectors. And i'm fairly sure corrupted data is on it. The drive was replaced and i'm trying to use it as additional storage. I can see and access the data that is on the drive. But i can't delete any of it. It just reappears. I can't format it. It just reappears. I can't delete the partition. it also just reappears. CHKDSK doesn't work, i've tried several 3rd party software packages. They give it a thumbs up, see the bad sectors, but can't partition it, wipe it, or anything else. It just comes back. But no errors except in the chkdsk. All this also in safe mode, and CMD as administrator with /f /r /x and i get the below result.

CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the bitmap for index $I30 for file 350E.
Sorting index $I30 in file 350E.
An unspecified error occurred (696e647863686b2e 9cd).
An unspecified error occurred (6e74667363686b2e 17ff).

Also tried doing all this using SuperAdmin. I've also tried to take ownership of the drive from "TrustedInstaller", it acts like it worked, and will show i have ownership. But if i close the windows and reopen them. Its back to "TrustedInstaller". Everything i'm trying to do, just reverts back. I would use Adata's software but it doesn't support the SU650...of course.

Any thoughts? similar experiences? Its a fairly new drive.

Solution
I'm trying to completely wipe the drive, I don't care about what's on it. I took care of that. I'm just trying to avoid loosing a 1tb drive.

Super administrator has higher permissions and authority than regular admin. There is a short process to activate it.
Not sure what you're doing with all the different permission levels..totally irrelevant.

Commandline diskpart, and the clean commend.
Wipe the whole drive.

Of course, this can't be done while booted from that same drive.

If this is the only drive your working with...you can delete all existing partitings in the context of a full OS reinstall.

'Super Admin'?
And trying to take over the TrustedInstaller function never ever ends up well.

This is when you replace the drive and recover from the full drive backup you made before this happened.

Try a disc editor such as DMDE.

https://dmde.com/

In the Partitions window, toggle MBR Off or GPT Off. Then save the changes and you should find that Disk Management will see an empty drive.

I took a look, sounds good. Will try it later. Thank you :)

Also, the drive isn't bitlocked or encrypted. I also wiped with zeros which completed "successfully". But again, reverted back.

the permission thing was looking at the possibility of it not letting me format/partition/etc because i didn't own the drive. that was why i went in that direction. I did Diskpart stuff, i wiped it. It reverted back like it never happened. and NOTHING is giving an error saying it didn't work besides CHKDSK. I also wiped it with 3rd party software by writing 0's to it. It also said completed, but the drive reverted back. Its no longer my primary boot drive.

I got "access denied"

I got "[W] LBA: 0(try 1): WinError 5. Access is denied" when trying the above. I'll look around in the software and try other things. maybe something else will work

Also it said "Error writing sector 0"

It appears that the drive has become read-only. This sometimes happens when there are no spare sectors. However, if this were the case, then I would expect to see some problems in the SMART report.

Can you show us the drive's SMART report with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo?

Makes a lot of sense. Here is the smart report for the drive....
Also, it looks like it may not be read only...Disk Management doesn't show that drive as read only, here is info from attributes via DiskPart

I can't see anything wrong. Would it be worth trying a Secure Erase?

Or you could install the drive in a USB enclosure. You could also disable automount and autoplay to prevent Windows from touching the device.

So, i guess Secure Wipe is different than Secure erase. I did "secure wipes" writing zeros a few times with different software, and it didn't work. But with your suggestion about Secure erase, i found https://eraser.heidi.ie/ and in like 2 seconds, the drive was empty. I used EaseUS partition manager to make the partition after and now file explorer shows an empty drive. I rebooted. It was still empty (were as before, anything i tried had the files and data back after reboot). I was able to make a test folder and now i'm doing a full format. So it appears https://eraser.heidi.ie/ did the job and really erased everything off the drive and i've an completely empty working drive (as long as the format works).

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. This has been a long time coming as i've been trying various things to be able to use the drive again, on and off since early (Jan/Feb) last year, but this was first time i posted asking for help. I just really wish i knew why this happened in the first place, lol. Thanks again.
