Hi everyone,

i’m after a spare internal ssd drive for backup and storage. Seen a few good things online here in the UK.

What’re people’s thoughts on these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-MX500-CT500MX500SSD1-NAND-Internal/dp/B0784SLQM6

https://www.amazon.co.uk/ADATA-Ultimate-SU800-512GB-Solid/dp/B01K8A29CS

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-MZ-76E500B-EU-Solid-State/dp/B078WQT6S6

Idea is to use it for window’s “file history” and the odd large download. My data is only 209gb and I need to trim a lot of old climbing videos so this will go down, so 500gb is more then enough for me I reckon.

My main ssd is a samsung 850 pro ssd 512gb. Only 209gb used.

Tempted to get the adata as it’s just for a backup, but i’ve never heard of Adata so am wary. Is it a good reliable brand? If it’s worth paying extra £15-20 for the crucial/samsung, then i’d consider that too.

Thanks!

Are you sure it would? (New drive will last longer than old one?) I though the pros having the MLC tech would last longer than any TLC drive? Old drive has 12TB written, so not a huge amount.
Well yes you are right about that and i thought its 850 Evo and compared it with 860 Evo my bad,(and there's not alot difference)so yes apart from that for your spare drive get any of those you have mentioned getting the inexpensive makes sense to me as it's only a spare drive and it's slightly slower than Samsung drive which if not noticeable in real world.

Well you could go with any ssd and as you are considering of getting a spare ssd then get any they all are good. The Samsung drive is the fastest among these so if you want you can get the 860 and use it as your main drive whereas your current 850 for spare. And also it goes without saying that a new drive will probably last longer than you main ssd.

Any idea how reliable the adata is? Is it less prone to failure than say a 2.5” hdd? As it’ll be a backup, i’m looking for reliability first😀

thanks for your help!

Mx500 should be best. Nearly identical performance of Samsung yet a little bit cheaper. Stay away from adata at all cost

Having used MX 500s for years now there’s absolutely no reliability issues and your computer will be dead before the total bites are written so I wouldn’t even go by that

The MX 500 is 100 TB TBW

There is no way you are ever going to exceed that which is 54 GB per day for 10 years

https://www.relaxedtech.com/reviews/crucial/mx500/1

So don’t be fooled by what was said above the MX 500 is your best deal you can get the largest drive at the lowest price and it’s gonna last well in excess of 10 years

The samsung 860 500gb is slightly cheaper in amazon germany. Slightly tempted to take out the 30 day free prime membership to get free shipping from germany for around £46. It's 51 euros from the german site. Worth the hassle for £7? Hmm. Will wait till tomorrow to see if the UK version drops a bit more, else will just go with cheaper of crucial/850 evo from combined UK/DE stores.
