I have a MSI Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard w/ 4 memory slots.

I've had 2x4gb DDR3 RipJaws in there for several years. It's time for an upgrade.

Should I:
  1. Replace the 2x4gb with a 2x8gb. (16gb total)
  2. Add another 2x4gb (16gb total)
  3. Add 2x8gb (24gb total)

What are the rest of your system specs? What is the purpose of this upgrade?

I'm upgrading because I'm running out of memory when I'm playing AAA games w/ chrome open (COD MW in particular) which causes major stutters. It's also the only thing besides the PSU and case that I haven't upgraded throughout my PC's 7+ year life.

i7-4790k Intel CPU
Z97 MSI Gaming 5 Motherboard
2x4gb DDR3 RipJaw RAM
GeForce GTX 970
770W PSU (Can't remember brand, but it's flagship)
250GB Flagship SSD for my Windows 10
1TB WD Drive for everything else

If you can find identical ram, go with the 2x4s if you can't, remove the old and go with 2x8s I don't think your system would even be capable of utilizing 24g of ram, even if it supports it, and since it is now legacy hardware it would be best to save what you can for next generation.
