Hi Guys,
I've installed a new stick of 4gig RAM bringing me up to 8gig.

I noticed that the free space on my C Drive dropped from 7:33gig to 3:56gig after the upgrade.

I turned off the laptop, and went back to 4gig and the free space went back up to 7:33gig.

I've done some searches on the problem though have not found an answer.

Does anyone know why this has happened and is this drop in Hard Drive free space normal when RAM is increased or an indicator of a problem?

Thanks for looking at my post

You are welcome.

If/when you disable hibernation you want to clear the hibernation file, which takes up a lot of space.

If you are running Windows 7 just open an elevated command prompt and type:

powercfg.exe -h off

the hit enter and it will turn off hibernation and delete the file. I've seen that clear up a great deal of space on some machines. Plus, W7 is not very good at hibernation -- all the bugs were never really fixed.
You need to manually set your paging file size, as in automatic mode it increases as the amount of memory increases. HERE is a short tutorial on how to do that.

Even 7GB is not enough free space on either an SSD or HDD. You need to free up more space; have you disabled hibernation, turned off restore points also?

Thanks for your reply RealBeast.

I have manually set the size of the paging file.

Restore points I keep an eye on daily & manage manually

Turning off hibernation was not something I was aware of and will look into doing so.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
