I currently have a 2WIRE 3801HGV modem/router that uses 802.1 b/g. I have two desktops connected by wire, a printer, couple of smartphones, (maybe a couple of ipads for christmas) and a laptop connected through wi-fi. I recently got a DLINK DIR-645 wireless router that uses 802.1 n and thought I could add it to my home network.

I was hoping to use the DLINK to get better reception and better speeds. I was wondering what the best way to do this, or if it is even worth while since the 2WIRE uses 802.1 b/g. I've read so many articles that were "close" to my situation but not quite the same. I am getting rather confused. Was hoping someone here could steer me in the right direction. Thanks.

So you want to use ONLY the Dlink for wireless or both?
Either way uou will need to have a wired connection between the two for better speed over wireless.

There are a couple of ways you can set this up:
1. Use your modem/router as a passthrough and let the Dlink handle the connection to your ISP and all the networking.
2. Use the Dlink as an Access point/Switch and allow the 2wire to do all the routing.

The first option is a bit more complicated but is definately the better solution. It will allow you to get the most out of your Dlink and give you a faster connection.
The second is much simpler but wont give you the full potential out of your Dlink.

As for how to either of the two, you will need to do a bit of reading...
