I'm having major difficulties adding a router to the 3800HGV-B. I purchased an Asus RT-N66U, and I'm am trying to set it up as my main router.

First, I connected the Asus LAN port to a laptop using an Ethernet cable. Then, I plugged the supplied Ethernet cable into the WAN port of the Asus router and the Broadband port on the old 2Wire one.

After running the setup, I selected DHCP, left the MAC address and host name spaces blank, and left the DNS settings to auto. I set my admin password and the SSID and its password. The next step was to detect what I presume is the modem. The setup tells me to unplug the 2Wire modem, wait 2 minutes, plug it back in, and click Detect again when the LED is flashing. The setup program fails to detect the modem.

I thought I might've had to put the 2Wire into bridge mode, so I tried that by checking a box that said something along the lines of 'router behind router connection.' That did nothing.

What am I doing wrong here. Did I connect something into the wrong port? The only ports filled on the 2Wire are the Phone Line 1 and the Broadband. The only ports filled on my Asus are the WAN and the LAN (for the laptop).

If you are not going to use the 2Wire modem for wireless or wired clients then you should turn off its wireless and put it in bridge mode (as you attempted to do). You need to plug your Asus WAN port into one of the 2Wire LAN ports, not the Broadband port. The broadband port should be empty.

How would I turn off wireless?
