Adding a USB.3 card

I want to buy a USB.3 card for my Dell XPS 400 which runs under Windows 7.The card would plug into one of the PCIe slots and comes with a driver. However I am wondering if there is anything in my setup, such as support by the BIOS (I have the latest - A07) or some chipset on the MOB that will nix the chance of this working. The XPS 400 is, after all, a fairly old machine - certainly pre version 3 of USB.

Provided you have the correct type of slot for the card it should be fine as long as you install the supplied driver (since Windows 7 does not support USB 3.0 natively).

If ever you need to boot from a USB device such as a pen drive though, you may have to plug that device into one of the original built-in USB 2.0 ports for the BIOS to recognise it. But in Windows, using the add-on USB 3.0 ports should present no problems.

Thank-you Mr. Corcoran, that's what I was hoping to hear. I like the St. Georges cross too; I'm from Hampshire myself.

Good point; I think I saw a free Molex when I last had the case open. I noticed that the StarTech cards, which I like, use that strange multi-pinned power connector. I don't know if I have a spare one of those though.
