Adding an SSD To My Existing Build

So for a while now, I've been thinking about upgrading my build to incorporate a SSD, turning my HDD into a backup, essentially. I understand it's possible to do so, though I'm unaware of how to do so after the fact; ie, when the operating system and everything are already stored on the HDD.

This is my current build; http://pcpartpicker.com/p/CZfj7P

The SSD I'm tentatively set on incoporating; Crucial MX200 CT500MX200SSD1 2.5" 500GB SATA 6Gbps (SATA III) Micron 16nm MLC NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (I'm not familiar enough with SSDs to know whether this is an ideal part; I only know that SSD is generally faster than HDD, and that the Crucial series seems to be well-reviewed and well-priced).

Given this set-up, how would I go about doing this? Is it actually possible, with my current build? Getting my operating system from the HDD to the SSD? Further, would anyone be able to offer suggestions on an ideal way of setting this up? Ie, use the HDD purely for a backup, use the SSD for operating system and the HDD for file, that sort of thing.

Your objective to use an SSD as your new boot drive is certainly doable given that a number of criteria are met, as follows..

1. Does your present system function without any problems in that the system boots without incident and thereafter functions trouble-free?
2. Are you comfortable enough with your present system that you would have no qualms in having a bit-for-bit copy of that system transferred to your new drive?
3. Is the disk-capacity of the new drive sufficient to contain the total contents of the drive that you would like to transfer?

Since your present drive is a 500 GB HDD & the SSD you're planning to purchase also has a capacity of 500 GB, you're in good shape.

The process is relatively simple & straightforward. You'll utilize a disk-cloning program to clone the contents of your 500 GB HDD to the SSD. Following the successful disk-cloning operation to ensure that your new SSD is perfectly functional in all respects, you can then utilize your HDD for backup/storage purposes by simply formatting that drive.

I don't know if you've previously used a disk-cloning program and prefer using some specific program. I can provide some suggestions in this area and some detailed info re the disk-cloning process if you desire.

As to your choice of the Crucial MX200 SSD...I haven't personally used it but the reviews seem positive enough. My own preference leans toward the Samsung SSDs - particularly the 850 Pro model. But I don't see anything negative re the Crucial and, as you say, it's competitively-priced.
