You can only SLI similar GPUs. GTX 680s with GTX 680s for example.
What particular card do you have? Asus, Gigabyte, Etc.
not looking to SLI these two cards was just wondering if i could install the gt 520 so I can add another display.
My 680 is a MSI Twin Frozer
I see what you mean. I've never heard of anyone doing this, so I'm not going to be much help. Good luck on this though. If you figure it out you should make a post so other people can find it.
Hmmm.. Not sure if you can help me here but I'll ask anyways I went ahead and installed the card withe the 680 but for some reason computer wont recognize the 520 the driver I'm using says it will support the 680 and also supports a 520. I'm trying to figure out why it wont recognize it any help would be great.
Also I'm about 90% positive that the 520 still works
Thanks
I found this, may or may not be helpful.

Look under Multi-Monitor, there is a bit about using a separate GPU for additional monitors.
Have you considered a splitter? That way you wouldn't need an extra card... Something to look into.
Make sure all your drivers are up-to-date. Make sure your PSU can handle the extra load.
