In my experience, run-of-the-mill DIMMs will mix fine ~90% of the time. Where things get hairy is high performance DRAM and overclocked setups.

The only way to find out for sure is to try it. There is no guarantee even a set of four "matched" DIMMs will work in dual-channel pairs unless your motherboard's QVL says so or the DIMM's QVL says so about your motherboard.

As said above a 50/50 crapshoot, DRAM that goes into a package has sticks tested to play together. DRAM makers are constantly changing memory chips used, getting chips from different production lots, different binning, even chips from different manufacturers
