Hi everyone

I'm having a problem with adding new computer in Active directory when i m trying add a new computer i'm getting a error message as below "Windows cannot create the new computer object because the pre-Windows 2000 computer name NAME is already in use. Select another name, and then try again." but there no computer exit in the same name even i have changed the computer name but still the same

Please anyone help me to sort out this problem

Hey guy, check the prewin 2000 logon names. Open your ADUC, find a computer and open it up. Under the "General" tab check the "Computer name (pre-Windows 2000):" name. You'll notice that it's limited to a certain amount of characters (perhaps 16 for computers and 20 for users? don't quote me on that) and if the name of the computer is longer, it'll cut it off since NetBIOS can't handle it.

For example, you create a computer with the name:
PCGUISE-EXT120-WIN8FISCALOFFICE

The prewin2000 name gets cut to PCGUISE-EXT120

When you go to add:

PCGUISE-EXT120-WIN8FINANCEOFFICE

It'll give you the error, because the shortened name is identical. Try searching for the first part of the name of the computer you're trying to add within ADUC, and see if you have any duplicates.

But my computer name is LAB01 and there are no names exit with this name in AD
