Hi, I would like to add RAM to this ga-ep31-ds3l motherboard.
I have an extra RAM from my old pc 512mb-1rx8 pc2-4200u-444-11

Can I just insert it to the motherboard and it will work?

Solution
You have the means to try it.
See if it works.
am is sold in kits for a reason.
A motherboard must manage all the ram using the same specs of voltage, cas and speed.
Ram from the same vendor and part number can be made up of differing manufacturing components over time.
Some motherboards can be very sensitive to this.
This is more difficult when more sticks are involved.

I put your odds of success at 50%
No harm in trying though.

Should I insert it in the red or the orange slot?
And I read on the Web that adding might affect the performance, is that correct?

Your motherboard manual should have instructions on where to populate an extra stick of ram.
No harm comes if you get it wrong.
Added ram is always a plus for performance. The question is how much.
I would not expect much unless you were starved for ram already.
You really need more than 2gb, 4gb should be minimum.
