I am currently using a Motorola SBG6580 wifi modem, but the signal doesn't reach the back areas of the house. I have run a Cat 5 cable through the rafters of the house and connected a second router (D-Link, DIR-655 Extreme N Gigabit) to the modem. What settingchanges should I make to each in order to extend the single signal throughout the house?
Any specifics would be helpful.

In my opinion you really should just wire everything if you want the best connection. I'm an electrician and ran Cat6E through my house and nearly doubled my speed over my wifi (26mbps to 50mbps). Well worth the time piping and wiring it. When wireless is a big deal we install lots of wireless access points (WAPS) in larger buildings, kind of like what you've done but still, that's not great.

Well this is for using wireless devices in the house and trying to keep my data charges down. I understand what you mean, but I can't hard wire cell phones and tablets. I am just trying to pick off of my modem and create a second AP that extends the signal. The issue is the second router from what my ISP is saying is trying to set an IP and my modem is trying to do the same and it basically stops my modem from working. My ISP won't help me do this.
